History shows us that early civilizations flourished wherever the natural resources were plenty to sustain the needs of the people. It has been one of the most sought after possessions throughout the world, especially in developing countries like India, where traditionally, Land ownership has been considered as a symbol of status and wealth. Land has been a part of Man’s natural heritage and access to it has been controlled in numerous ways, which have undergoing a transformation throughout the ages.

Historically, Land administration and land Information have been confined to the revenue generation. In the present context where the Revenue generation has taken a back seat, the Land Administration and Information has taken a new dimension of socio-economic developmental tool. LIS now aims at addressing the various stakeholders as detailed below:

A. Citizen - Providing conclusive titles and boundaries
B. Government - Planning for development and welfare activities, Environmental Planning, Industrial Expansion, Taxation
C. Banking and Financial institutions- Loans, Insurance
D. Industries/Enterprises

The benefit of a Land Information System (LIS) and the positive impact a LIS has on the development for the whole society i e contribution to social stability, sustainable development and economic performance has taken the prominence. The LIS has proved to address the needs in activities from Land Use Planning, Environmental Planning, Industrial Planning to real property transfer, real property mortgaging and real property insurance. Other than Government and Industries, enterprises like banks, real property brokers and insurance companies are also immensely benefiting from this initiative.

One of the other important and driving factors is the focus of the Governments on the ecological system, wherein the exploitation of land resources and its impact on the eco-systems and the depletion of life supporting systems is causing a concern. The Governments’ are now using the Land Information System to address these issues.
